Meet Our Leadership Team:

Over the past 30 years Volker Bornemann has held a number of leadership roles in Regulatory Science and Food Safety R&D in the agricultural solutions industry, and more recently in environmental and life science laboratory service businesses. He has a wealth of business development and technology-related experience acquired by expanding innovative, science and technology solution-based companies, teams, and laboratories in the life sciences marketplace.

Before Avazyme, Volker held various R&D leadership and operating roles in the Agricultural Solutions Division at BASF and was a leader in innovation teams and mergers and acquisitions. Volker was President of Smithers Viscient, a mid-size contract research organization focused on global environmental testing and business development and operations across agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. There, he was responsible for Business Process Optimization, acquisition of companies in the US, Europe, and Japan, and their subsequent integration into the existing Smithers’ business.

Volker is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University, as well as an Advisory Council Member at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and the North Carolina Ag Biotech Advisory Council. He holds a degree in Chemistry (Vordiplom) from Universität Hamburg in Germany, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Rice University where he studied the Biosynthesis of Antibiotics from Fermentation. Volker has completed extensive Executive Education at Harvard Business School.

Steve has over 30 years hands-on experience in mass spectrometry and chromatography-based analytical methods, as well as general spectroscopy technologies. His extensive knowledge spans the qualitative and quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical and crop protection active ingredients (BASF), pesticide residue chemistry, bioanalytical measurements for pharmacokinetic (PK) and ADME (adsorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) studies supporting pre-clinical research, and development programs for small and large pharmaceutical companies, including Parke-Davis and Pfizer. Steve has an M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Michigan, a B.A. in Chemistry from Carleton College, and an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Anibal has held senior roles in the analytical and discovery chemistry industries since 1981, through which has developed a thorough understanding of GLP method development, validation, instrument qualification, quality assurance, and quality control. Forty years of direct experience with chemical synthesis and analytical method development and instrumentation have given him an invaluable framework for providing theoretical and practical guidance to research projects and proposals involving new products and methods.

Anibal is a 47-year member of the American Chemical Society and routinely helps train newly hired analytical chemists at Avazyme. He was an ACS Wikipedia Fellow in 2018 and completed the 12 week “Women in Science” course that same year. Anibal holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Rochester, an M.A. in Chemistry from Columbia University, and a B.S. in Chemistry from Fordham University (cum laude). Anibal has published six papers in academic journals including the Journal of Organic Chemistry and the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
